Galvanic is one of the latest innovations to take the beauty world by storm. It is a cosmetic electrotherapy treatment and is generally focused on women aged 40 or above, to provide smooth and youthful skin.
The history of Galvanism originates from Italian born Luigi Galvani, known for discovering animal electricity. In 1970, he became aware that when an electric spark touched a dead frog’s leg, the response was for it to twitch. This was the beginning of the research into bioelectricity, which is still used today, and studies the electrical signals and patterns from nerves and muscles. It started being used in the medical field and then switched over as beauty treatment in the 1980’s. It was then found in beauty salons by 1903.
The procedure is divided into 2 phases, desincrustation, which uses an acidic solution and negative charge cycle, to open the pores. This makes it easier to remove any impaction, such as blackheads as they can be very hard and resistant to remove. The next phase is iontophoresis which uses an alkaline solution and positive charge cycle, then closes the pores, soothes the nerves, reduces circulation and tightens the skin. It will also allow any products that are used, to be penetrated deeper into the skin’s epidermal layers, dramatically increasing the efficiency of the active ingredients.
Galvanic machines can be applied to the face and body, using a variety of tools for each phase of the treatment and area of the body. When the electrical current is gently and gradually applied to the surface of the skin the current is then increased to the required level, and you may experience a slight tingling sensation. When applied around the face there may be a mild metallic taste experienced; this is due to the current coming from the microcurrent probes and flowing to where our taste receptors are in the mouth. It is able to do this, as it is strong enough to also engage our muscles deep beneath the skin, which is where it receives its greatest benefit. You will also be asked to hold the positive electrode whilst iontophoresis is delivered, unless shoulders are exposed, in which case it can be placed under a shoulder.
Galvanic treatment can have the following benefits; improve conditions of all skin types, cleanse and detoxify the skin, promote blood and oxygen flow, provide moisture and nourishment, reduce redness, reduce sun damage, improve hyper-pigmentation, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, ward of signs of aging, increase product penetration, smooth and radiate the skin, improve acne, increase cell metabolism, increase healing after surgical or non surgical procedures, improve movement of fatty deposits, speed up body metabolism and improve body muscle toning.
In addition, although this treatment will be used for beauty purposes, it has been used for different medical conditions including “sweat tests” to diagnose cystic fibrosis, treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), physical therapy to help deliver drugs locally to musculus-skeletal disorders such as tennis elbow, and also principle actives to treat localised skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis. It has also been used to improve the symptoms of Bell’s Palsy

Galvanic for the face (1 hr)
There are 3 different electrode tools that can be used to treat the face, chest and neck area. These are the Cleanse Electrodes with sponges to start for desincrustation. Then moving on to iontophoresis, the Roller Electrode can be used for larger areas of the face, neck and chest, followed by the Twin Ball Electrode, to cover small areas around the eyes and nose.
The treatment will start with a cleanse, exfoliation and tone of the face and neck, using Tropic Skincare, to prepare the skin. Desincrustation will begin with the machine, using a desincrustation gel and undergoing treatment for 2-5 minutes depending on the skin type. This will then be removed and steam will be introduced and extraction will begin.
Next an iontophoresis gel will be applied and treatment will start with 10 minutes of negative charge, followed by 2-3 minutes of positive charge. The gel will then be removed and a choice of Tropic Skincare mask will then be applied for 10-15 minutes.
A serum of your choice will be massaged into your face; there is a choice of CBD as well as a range of Tropic Skincare serums to tailor make your skincare. It will then be completed with Tropic Skincare moisturiser and eye cream. Your skin will feel refreshed, youthful and more radiant.
Galvanic to the Body (30 mins / 1hr / 1.5hr)
There are two different electrode tools that will be used on the body, these are Cleanse Electrodes with sponges or Roller Electrode to start for desincrustation. Then moving on to iontophoresis, the Roller Electrode can be used for all areas.
The treatment will start with cleanse and exfoliation of the body, using Tropics Body Smooth and removed with warm mitts. Then a desincrustation gel from Strictly Professional will be applied to the treatment area, and will be worked on for 2-5 minutes for each area, depending on the size of the area being treated. This will be repeated for each area being treated. Once all areas have been completed, warm mitts will again be used to remove the product.
Next an iontophoresis gel from Strictly Professional will be applied and massaged in using the Roller Electrode for 10 minutes of negative charge followed by 2-3 minutes of positive charge, finishing with warm mitts and Tropic Body Love will be applied to finish
After the treatment is complete you should see the skin will improve in appearance, looking more refreshed, toned and hydrated.

Kill Bacteria & Improve Acne
High frequency is a fascinating treatment, which was first introduced in the late 1800’s by the renowned inventor, scientist and pioneer Nikola Tesla. Back then it was known as the “violet ray” offering many functions before the invention of “modern” antibiotics. It was known for the healing of infections and wounds such as strep throat and other many medical conditions.
Later in 1892, high frequency current was again used by French biophysicist Jacques-Arsene d’Arsonval who did work in electrotherapy. He used “Tesla current” or “D’Arsonval high frequency” to treat diseases of the skin and mucus membranes.
By 1970’s European salons were using high frequency for cosmetic healing purposes and by the 1980’s in North America by skincare professionals. This technology then became licensed for treatment for many skin conditions ranging from acne, wrinkles, to hair loss, to name a few, and was considered a very safe and non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin. It is a gentle alternative to dramatic plastic surgery, laser resurfacing, chemical peels and other invasive treatments.
High frequency machines can be applied to the face and body, using a variety of glass electrodes of many shapes and sizes to fit the different contours, for ease of use. When it is applied to the surface of the skin the mild electrical current is gently introduced into the neon or argon gas filled glass electrode, creating a subtle orange or violet glow and buzzing sound and a therapeutic zapping and tingling sensation is experienced. The current is then increased to the required level.
This contact ignites the inert gas within the electrode which produces healing electrical light energy and unstable oxygen instantly converts into purifying ozone; infusing the skin with rejuvenating oxygen molecules. Studies show that both types of gas are effective whatever the skin concern, however we use argon gas violet ray electrode with a Carlton Professional machine.

High Frequency for the face (1 hr)

The treatment will start with a cleanse, exfoliation, steam and tone of the face and neck, using Tropic Skincare, to prepare the skin; high frequency will begin with the machine, using a oxygenated cream, and a gauze will be applied for 15-20 minutes. If skin is particularly oily, talc may be used to help dry up excess oil and leave a germicide layer on the skin. This will then be removed and a choice of Tropic Skincare mask will be applied for 10-15 minutes.

High Frequency to direct area (15 mins for one off treatment )or 5 mins if included in the main treatment)
The Stick Electrode Head is used for areas which require a direct “zap” to kill off bacteria deep under the surface of the skin, such as bites, cysts, spots and wounds, although this can also be used where spots keep reoccurring time and time again but do not seem to develop a head.
The treatment area is first cleansed and oxygenated cream is applied to the area. The machine is then turned on and up high and held just under a cm away from the skin surface for 3 mins. This will create a spark between the end of the Stick Head and the skin surface, allowing it to pass through the skin and kill the bacteria deep within.
High Frequency to the Body (30 mins / 1hr / 1.5hr)
There are four different heads that will be used on the body, these are Roller Head for body, legs and arms, Comb Head for scalp, Bend Head tube for arms and Mushroom for smaller areas such as feet or hands.
The treatment will start with cleanse and exfoliation of the body, using Tropics Body Smooth and removed with warm mitts. Then an oxygenated cream will be applied to each area, and will be worked on for upto 15 minutes, depending on the your treatments length of time, as well as the areas which you would like to work on.. If you are specifically working on the scalp for hair growth, exfoliation will not be carried out, but instead a 15 minute massage will be included as part of the treatment to increase stimulation to the hair follicles.

MICRODERMABRASION
Deep Clean & Improve Uneven Skintone and Scarring
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that removes dead skin cells using fine crystals and a vacuum. It can be used on the face and body with the aim to remove dead skin, which in turn rejuvenates it. This reduces fine lines, minor scars and age spots, and makes the skin smoother and younger looking.
The history of facial resurfacing goes back to 1500, when the Egyptians used sandpaper to improve scars; By 1900, microdermabrasion was developed and modified in the 1950’s as a tool to rejuvenate the skin. In 1985-1988 Marini and Lo Brutto designed and perfected a new microdermabrasion technique in Italy through the Southern Italy Plastic Surgery Association, to provide a painless procedure with minimal complications and inconvenience to the client. This spread throughout Europe from late 1980’s to mid 1990’s, until Mattoli Engineering introduced it to the US market in 1996, where it grew in popularity.
The procedure can be applied to the face and body, using a variety of different diamond heads to suit the area being treated. It begins with the skin being stretched slightly and gently with a free hand, and the chosen head attachment is used to glide across the surface of the skin in an upward motion. The suction is started low and then adjusted to suit each individual service area and client comfort.
Microdermabrasion can have the following benefits; remove blackheads and swollen pores, help improve acne including scaring. It can reduce size of pores by unclogging them and improving circulation. Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, age spots, melasma (patches of discoloration) and stretch marks. It also gets rid of uneven skin tone and texture. After treatment you skin will feel soft and smooth and cleaner and will absorb product more efficiently.
How often should I have microdermabrasion?
As a general rule it is recommended to have sessions every 2 weeks until you start seeing results. Then monthly to maintain results depending on what you want to achieve.
Microderabrasion for the face (1 hr)
There are various heads that can be used to treat the areas of the face, neck and chest area. These depend on the area being treated. Micro heads are used around the nose, eye and fine line areas, whereas medium to larger heads are used around remaining larger areas.
The treatment will start with a cleanse and exfoliation, using Tropic Skincare, and then steam to open the pores in preparation, removing any blackheads and Microdermabrasion will then begin, working on all areas of the face, neck and the chest, focusing particularly to areas of concern. Extraction will also be carried out afterward to remove any remaining blackheads or clogged pores.
A choice of Tropic Skincare mask will then be applied for 10-15 minutes and after toner to close pores. A serum of your choice will be massaged into your face. Microdermabrasion will begin, working on the treatment area, paying particular attention to areas of concern. Depending on the skin concern additional extraction pay follow or the use of additional oils or serums to help with scaring will be applied and finished with Tropic Body Love.

Face and Body Contouring and Fat Reduction
Ultrasonic Cavitation and RF Treatments, including vacuum function, are non surgical methods of tightening the skin, and are fastly becoming popular within the beauty industry, as a slimming aid and natural facelift. I use an Ultrasonic Cavitation 5 in 1 Radio Frequency Vacuum Cellulite Slimming Machine to carry out treatments to the face and body. Providing a variety of methods to reduce fat and tighten skin, thus delivering better results.
This machine helps to dissolve fat, improve lymphatic drainage, stimulate collagen production to firm skin and improve elasticity.
The procedure involves using several functions such as RF low energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin known as the dermis to stimulate collagen and vacuum function to improve circulation. In addition the ultrasonic cavitation, which uses ultrasound technology, applies pressure high enough to break down fat cells into glycerol and free fatty acids.

A collagen microcurrent gel will be applied to each area, and will be worked on for 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the your treatments length of time, as well as the areas which you would like to work on.
